Preparing the Future STEM Faculty: Poster Abstracts

University of Kansas
Two Schools, One Mission

The University of Kansas has developed strong research and educational links among graduate students and faculty in the Schools of Engineering and Education in inquiry-based educational activities. A recent US Department of Transportation grant that dealt with air quality issues in the Kansas City Metro area provided an opportunity for graduate students in both schools to learn a variety of teaching strategies that were employed in JR and Senior high schools in modular form. The approach involved development of module-based inquiry experiments and field work, team building approaches, interdisciplinary work, and non-classroom based evaluation tools for science education. The graduate students translated their experiences for use in their own teaching efforts.
