Preparing the Future STEM Faculty: Poster Abstracts

How Much Support Do They Get? A Survey of MIT Graduate Teaching Assistants

 

The Teaching and Learning Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been investigating how to strengthen TA training at the Institute. As part of that investigation, we conducted a survey in the spring semester of 2003 of the current TAs to which we received 375 responses. The survey asked the TAs about: (1) their previous teaching experiences; (2) what types of training, information, and/or support services had been available to them; (3) how effective or helpful that training, information, and/or support had been; and (4) what kind of training, information, and/or support services they would like to see available in the future. This poster session will report the results of that survey and outline the recommendations put forward as a result of the survey and other research.
