Preparing the Future STEM Faculty: Poster Abstracts

Northwestern University
Preparing Northwestern University’s STEM Graduate Students for Success

Northwestern University’s Searle Center for Teaching Excellence offers a variety of programs and services to support graduate students’ efforts to prepare for their future roles as faculty members. Our monthly Graduate Student Workshops introduce participants to the scholarship of learning and teaching while helping them apply theory to their own practice. The Teaching Toolbox Series allows graduate students to informally discuss classroom issues each month. The workshops and discussions range in topic though several specifically address STEM students. The WINGS (Web-enhanced Instruction for Northwestern Graduate Students) Training Series allows graduate students to experience and design a web-based course using Blackboard. The Teaching Assistant Fellow (TAF) Program trains outstanding TAs to create and lead workshops for new TAs in their own departments, exposing both TAFs and new TAs to recent research on teaching and learning. The International Scholars (IS) Program pairs trained undergraduates with new international graduate students to prepare them for their TA responsibilities through weekly practice and discussion. Finally, the Graduate Teaching Certificate Program allows advanced graduate students to critically examine their teaching over two years through development, practice, and reflection. The Searle Center also works with the Graduate School and University Career Services on the Beyond Books Series, which focuses on professional skill development in research, teaching, and service.
