| Institutionalizing Professional Development for Graduate Teaching Associates at the Ohio State University |
The Ohio State University has recently initiated a program, mandated and funded by the Provost, which requires that all units that hire graduate teaching associates (GTAs) provide them with a specified baseline of training, offer ongoing support, and appoint a suitable faculty or staff member to oversee these efforts. This program had its origin in a survey conducted by the Graduate School on the quality of the graduate education experience which indicated that GTAs generally believed that there was insufficient preparation and support for their duties. The university Faculty and TA Developemnt Office was provided with funds to act as a central source of support for unit programs supporting the mandate. These programs include the university-wide TA orientation conference in the fall, grants to enhance unit GTA efforts, support for GTA coordinators, professional development opportunities for senior GTAs, awards for exemplary GTA programs, and organizational development consultation. We will discuss the details of these programs and the impact they have had on the preparation of STEM graduate students.
