Preparing the Future STEM Faculty: Poster Abstracts

Penn State University - Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence
Three Basic Programs that Support Graduate Instructors and Faculty

Of the many programs routinely offered by the Schreyer Institute, three together provide support to graduate student instructors and faculty throughout the academic year. STEM and non-STEM graduate instructor and faculty participation will be illustrated for each program. Program descriptions such as the following will also be provided.

1. Prior to the start of each semester, a half-day New Instructor Orientation introduces new arrivals to the local teaching and learning culture and helps them prepare for their teaching assignments by providing a session-planning workshop in sections capped at 25 participants each.
2. In spring and fall semesters, 6-8 Schreyer Institute Teaching Luncheons offer occasions for instructors to get together at roundtables of eight to discuss particular teaching problems announced in advance. Institute staff facilitate these roundtables and utilize their own notes and participant response sheets to compose summaries that are shared more broadly in an electronic newsletter.
3. Finally, a 10-session Course in College Teaching offered every semester invites more experienced instructors to participate in an interdisciplinary learning community that explores issues of pedagogy in the light of actual classroom experiences. Participants complete assignments that can be used to construct teaching portfolios. The course promotes the scholarship of teaching and encourages participants to conduct classroom research.
