Preparing the Future STEM Faculty: Poster Abstracts

University of New Hampshire
The University of New Hampshire’s Academic Programs in College Teaching

Begun in 1995, the University of New Hampshire’s Academic Programs in College Teaching prepare doctoral students from throughout the university, including all of the STEM fields, for academic teaching positions by ensuring that they are “teaching-ready” by the time they complete the doctorate. The centerpiece of our Preparing Future Faculty program, these academic programs are collaborative ventures of the Graduate School, the Center for Teaching Excellence and many of the university’s academic programs and departments. Two programs for doctoral students – a 12-credit Cognate in College Teaching and a 32-credit Master of Science for Teachers (M.S.T.) – may be added to any of our PhD programs. In addition, a 12-credit Graduate Certificate in College Teaching for faculty, post-docs, and doctoral students from other colleges and universities is also offered. The master’s and cognate each has a set of core courses offered by the college teaching program faculty; field and disciplinary courses related to teaching in specific areas of study offered by disciplinary faculty; and a teaching praxis which includes the development of a teaching portfolio under the supervision of a teaching committee composed of college teaching and disciplinary faculty. The Graduate Certificate in College Teaching is designed to enhance the effectiveness of college teaching for individuals preparing for an academic career, such as doctoral and post-doctoral students from other institutions. All classes are available electronically. Five 2-credit courses are used to develop core competencies; all students then complete a capstone experience for an additional 2 credits. Developed under the auspices of FIPSE, the UNH Academic Programs in College Teaching were awarded a Theodore M. Hesburgh Certificate of Excellence by TIAA-CREF in 2002. These programs are currently the model for a FIPSE-funded Partnership for Academic programs in College Teaching (PACT) involving six institutions.
