| A “University Teaching Certificate” at the University of Utah |
The Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence and The Graduate School at University of Utah are partners in initiating a “University Teaching Certificate” program for experienced graduate instructors. The purpose of the program is to (1) improve the level of instruction and competencies of graduate teaching assistants and (2) enhance departmental teaching through projects carried out by the program participants. The first University Teaching Certificate cohort is meeting weekly throughout one academic year to discuss readings and issues about teaching in the university classroom. Topics include: theories, history and research; methods; practical teaching activities; writing across the curriculum; multi-media approaches; grading and assessment; career progression. Each participant is required to implement a project that furthers the teaching mission of her/his department. Each group member receives a $500 stipend for implementing this project. Individuals in the first cohort group come from a wide variety of colleges across the campus. The reason for choosing such a diverse group is to create an awareness of different vantage points regarding university instructional matters so that group members will be better-equipped to make an educated decision on what form of instruction will best work in their classroom. Our first cohort includes 10 members from the following colleges: Fine Arts, Education, Humanities, Engineering, Nursing, Science, Social and Behavioral Science, and the School of Business.
