Preparing the Future STEM Faculty: Poster Abstracts

Virginia Tech
GEDI at Virginia Tech

GEDI - The Graduate Education Development Institute at Virginia Tech is a new initiative that draws upon Virginia Tech's strengths in graduate education and its expertise in new and original technology use to foster changes in the ways graduate students are prepared for becoming critically engaged teachers and contributors to 21st-century universities. GEDI creates opportunities for multidisciplinary groups of graduate students to develop pedagogy skills that are inclusive and appropriate to the sites and disciplines in which they teach; they also explore how innovative uses of teaching and learning technologies may better facilitate active learning. In GEDI, graduate students also have access to new electronic portfolio software that allows them to create a multifaceted Professional Development ePortfolio, or PDeP. The PDeP offers them the opportunity to begin building a teaching portfolio that houses the products of, and documents their reflective processes about, their development as graduate student instructors and future faculty.
