Program Description:

The Pathways to the Professoriate workshop series represents one of several opportunities for the professional development of graduate students at Duke. It is designed to supplement teacher training already being conducted at the department and program level, as well as in the Center for Teaching, Learning and Writing and the Center for Instructional Technology. Topics include reflection on beliefs about students and learning, writing an effective syllabus, selecting teaching and learning activities, and evaluating teaching and learning. Participants draft a philosophy of teaching statement or syllabus and engage in a peer review process. The workshops provide a unique opportunity for students to engage in interdisciplinary and interactive conversations about teaching. Over 120 PhD students have participated in the first two semesters of this program.

Evidence:

This is a new initiative in 2003 that offers centralized teacher training.
