At the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the Rackham School of Graduate Studies and the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) collaborate to provide two Preparing Future Faculty programs each year, a selective one for 50 doctoral candidates and one open to all graduate students, which typically serves about 200. The PFF program for doctoral candidates is a five-week May seminar. Its topics include: preparation for the academic job search, information about higher education (institutional types and faculty work life), and discussion of effective and reflective teaching. Participants visit other Michigan colleges and universities, prepare a teaching portfolio, and participate in numerous discussions with faculty about teaching and faculty life. Over 170 graduate students have completed this program in the last four years, over 70 of them from STEM disciplines. Rackham and CRLT's one-day university-wide PFF conference provides a general overview of the topics also covered in the May seminar. About half of the participants in the one-day event are from STEM disciplines. |
