Poster Abstracts Virginia Tech A Pipeline Model for Contemporary Pedagogical Practices in STEM
Virginia Tech is a comprehensive University with land-grant missions of instruction, research, and solving the problems of society through public service and outreach activities. Like all universities, the institution is committed to diversity in its student body, faculty, and staff. In a 2004 working document on diversity, the Provost’s Office and Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Visitors stated “it is critical that Virginia Tech engages in an ongoing transformative process that will change the culture and allow the university to benefit fully from its increasing diversity. This transformative process will include a broad range of changes to the following areas: policy; personnel; pedagogy; and programs.” This poster session will address pipeline efforts in all four areas with an emphasis on contemporary pedagogical practices within the STEM disciplines in the Colleges of Engineering and Science. The role of community in learning, teaching as a transactional process, curriculum reform, integration of diversity and cultural awareness, alternative delivery methods that address the needs of diverse learners, teaching and technology, authentic assessment techniques, and mentoring and advising will be highlighted.. |
