College Classroom Course:EPD654 Teaching Science and Engineering
On-line Course, Fall, 2007

Wednesdays, September 5 – December 12, 1:30 – 2:45 pm CST

Open to 3 – 5 Students from each CIRTL* Network Institution
Designed especially for graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines as well as social, behavioral, and economic (SBE) sciences, this course provides an on-line forum in which to discuss issues of learning, teaching, and assessment through the lens of teaching-as-research, learning-through-diversity, and learning community. The course is designed to promote the development of those skills and habits-of-mind, along with the knowledge base, associated with high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment.  The learning experience will consist of three components:

  • weekly, hour-long conversations in a web-conference format.
  • one hour on your own campus with three to four other students enrolled, plus
  • readings and learning activities.

The on-campus hour will be determined by consensus with your campus instructor and those students who register.
Each student will need individual access to a computer and one phone line.  This is an interactive, live web-conference, so working in a computer lab is generally not appropriate.  The student’s individual graduate office may be appropriate in most cases.  The course will use WisLine Web conferencing that allows effective and easy communication and collaboration in real-time. Three of the fifteen sessions will be video-conferences.  WisLine Web uses a web browser and a phone.  http://www.uwex.edu/ics/wlweb/index.html  The phone call will be an 800 number.  Students will have no extra costs for the technology.
