Take-away messages from CIRTL's Alternative Academic Careers Coffee Hour

The C.R.E.A.T.E. (Consider, Read, Elucidate the hypotheses, Analyze and interpret the data, and Think of the next Experiment) strategy is a new teaching approach that seeks to transform the learning environment of an undergraduate course to model the creativity, complexity, and excitement of the scientific process.

Join us as we continue our Building an Academic Career Coffee Hour series on Thursday, January 24 with “Alternative academic careers.” This discussion, facilitated by Chris Vanags of Vanderbilt University, Anne Poduska of Cornell University and Sue Cardinal of the University of Rochester, will center on non-faculty positions in academia, including the advantages and disadvantages of “alt-ac” opportunities as well as how teaching or research experience can be an asset in these positions.

Join us as we kick off our second Coffee Hour Series, “Teaching and Learning in the STEM Classroom,” on Wednesday, January 16 with “Electronic distractions in the classroom: managing and utilizing the instant connections to the world.”  This discussion, facilitated by Mary Elizabeth Besterfield-Sacre of the University of Pittsburgh and Angel Hoekstra of the University of Colorado, Boulder, is the first in a series focusing on teaching and learning challenges in the STEM classroom. Future topics include teaching in diverse classrooms, teaching and using writing skills in the STEM classroom, and fostering critical thinking.
