Japanese Efforts to Promote Gender Equity

I have learned that the Japanese like puns. The symbol of the campaign for gender equity/increasing the participation of women in science is a frog - because the word for frog is similar to the word for change.

Sapporo - quick thoughts

Yesterday we visited Nihon University in Tokyo. The presentation showed us that while the percentage of women scientists and engineers in Japan is very much lower than that in the US the issues that women researchers face are very similar in the two countries. We learnt about a distance network being set up to help women researchers telecommute and discussed possible ways to leverage the network to help enhance US-Japanese interactions.

Upcoming trip to Japan

Today Boulder celebrated its sesquicentennial (150 yr anniversary of the founding of the city). The photo is of one of the people who gathered to celebrate by ringing bells, hitting drums, or playing some other instrument. The University of Colorado, Boulder is a little younger - it was founded in 1876. Coincidentally, The University of Hokkado, Japan which I will be visiting next week also had its beginnings in 1876 when Sapporo Agricultural College was founded.
