Fall 2009: The College Classroom

 

In this CIRTL Network course, you will learn the basics of effectiveteaching as well as the forefront ideas in college education. Explorewhat your teaching philosophy might be and how it will impact yourfuture classes. Design a course curriculum accordingly and learn how tomonitor and investigate the effectiveness of the learning environment.

The fifteen-week learning experience will consist of weekly, hour-long conversations on-line plus another hour on your own campus ofinteraction with three to four students also enrolled. The course will use web conferencing technology that allows effective and easy communication and collaboration in real-time.

Technology Requirements

  • Individual access to a computer in a quiet location with a high-speed internet connection. A hard-wired or a strong, consistent wireless internet connection is recommended.
  • Microphone and headphones
  • A webcam (if you don’t have one, they can be obtained for $25-$75)

Credit Options

Students may participate with or without credit, as they prefer.Graduate students at campuses other than the host institution who areinterested in receiving course credit are encouraged to work with theirlocal CIRTL Network campus leaders or advisors to receive independentstudy credit. Credits offered by the host campuses will vary.

CIRTL Network courses are open to graduate students at CIRTL Networkcampuses including: University of Colorado at Boulder, HowardUniversity, Michigan State University, Texas A&M University,Vanderbilt University, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Priority registration is given to students from in STEM departments(science, technology, engineering and mathematics)
