Core Ideas

CIRTL programs draw upon three core ideas that guide our approach to preparing future faculty:

  • Learning through Diversity (LtD)
  • Teaching-as-Research (TAR)
  • Learning Communities (LC)

Student & Faculty Benefits

Through CIRTL programming, graduate students and postdocs build skills, prepare for teaching roles, and gain an advantage in their job search. Faculty and institutions also gain benefits from engaging with our international community of STEM and education innovators.

Projects & Partnerships

CIRTL Institutions often partner together, and with external organizations, on grant-funded projects. These opportunities provide additional support for local teams and allow exploration of new teaching techniques, equity, inclusion and change initiatives, research, and more.

“CIRTL really shapes my ongoing perspective as a teacher. I’m constantly reaching out to resources within the network, friends and teachers, mentors that I met for support, but also those ideas and just that habit formed of thinking about our teaching, as research, trying new things, trying to make a difference. CIRTL really set that up for me.” – Associate Professor of Psychology

Our Network

The CIRTL Network includes 45 research universities across the United States and Canada. Each university houses a local CIRTL community, unique in its student populations, programs, and special areas of expertise. Together we bring that value of diversity and knowledge to our cross-Network, creating engaging programs that support teaching excellence and shared learning.
