The next institution on our CIRTL Spotlights series is Boston University (BU), one of twenty-five institutions that makeup the CIRTL Network.

We cast our light on BU to showcase several centers of STEM research and education that match CIRTL pillars and mission. Among them is the Center for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching (CEIT) which encompasses all schools and colleges within the university and is charged broadly with promoting and supporting innovative and exemplary teaching and facilitating continued professional development of faculty as teachers. Cornell University Receives Grant That Will Help Graduate Students Improve Teaching

Cornell University had been awarded a $125,000 grant from the Teagle Foundation to increase opportunities for graduate students to become future teaching scholars. The grant will fund the 21st Century Graduate Teaching and Research Scholars Program that will build upon Cornell’s Graduate Teaching Certificate Initiative, also funded by the Teagle Foundation.  Read More »

CIRTL Network Exchange to Vanderbilt University

CIRTL Spotlights: Johns Hopkins University

Johns Hopkins University, often cited as the first modern graduate research university in America, firmly believes that teaching and research complement and strengthen one another. Johns Hopkins University began awarding PhD degree’s in STEM areas in 1878; today it produces one the largest cohorts of PhDs each year of any private university in the country. UW–Madison Teaching Academy Welcomes Delta Learning Community Members

The UW Teaching Academy is comprised of faculty and instructional staff members at the University of Wisconsin–Madison who provide leadership to strengthen undergraduate, graduate, and outreach teaching and learning on campus. Teaching-as-Research Fellows at Vanderbilt Share Completed Projects

This year, four graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from Vanderbilt University completed Teaching-as-Research (TAR) projects, exploring aspects of undergraduate education in their disciplines. These four TAR fellows include Mike Myers, Mechanical Engineering; Elizabeth Adolph and Margarita Pietro, Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering; and Manara Carely, Earth and Environmental Sciences. CIRTL Network Exchanges from the University of Colorado Boulder

Three CU Boulder TAR fellows participated in CIRTL Network Exchanges in the spring of 2012 to present the findings of their TAR research to fellow institutions in the CIRTL Network.

Kristin Boles presented the findings of her TAR research and gave a colloquium about her coursework at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Kristin conducted a study in the fall 2011 to determine if simple glassware demonstrations helped improve student performance in general chemistry labs. Read More »
