Teaching and Learning Publication Explores the Philosophy of the CIRTL Network

Katherine Friedrich

The spring 2008 issue of “New Directions for Teaching and Learning,” “Educating Integrated Professionals: Theory and Practice on Preparation for the Professoriate,” focuses on the need for new faculty to integrate teaching, research and service.

Together with their colleague KerryAnn O’Meara, two CIRTL Network leaders – Carol Colbeck and Ann Austin – edited this special issue.

The editors assert that many doctoral graduates feel unprepared for their careers as faculty, since they lack experience in advising, service, administration, facilitating active learning, and other facets of faculty work. The issue explores the challenges and rewards of developing an integrated approach to future faculty preparation.

A chapter called “Strategies for Preparing Integrated Faculty: The Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning,” explains the goals and advantages of the CIRTL Network’s philosophy of faculty preparation. The chapter was coauthored by Austin, Colbeck, and Mark Connolly.
