AbstractHow can one use research to transform a course? And how do other instructors choose to use the products of such work? This poster presents the process and outcomes from a four-year, eight-semester project to develop, establish, and maintain a new research-based course approach in junior-level electricity and magnetism (E&M). The course materials included clicker questions, interactive tutorials, modified homework, and documented student difficulties. We report on the sustainability of the use of the materials themselves, as well as the course outcomes (e.g., learning gains and positive student attitudes) across instructor and institution, including examples of less successful transfer. We describe the factors enabling or hampering sustainability of the course approach.
