AbstractLarge, Ph.D.-producing universities like UW-Madison are a major leverage point for changing the preparation of future faculty to teach. The Delta Program In Research, Teaching and Learning (www.delta.wisc.edu) is the implementation of the CIRTL Network at UW-Madison. Delta provides professional development training in teaching for current and future Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) faculty. Like CIRTL, Delta programming is based on three pillars: Teaching-As-Research, Learning Communities and Learning-Through-Diversity. Since September 2003, over 2400 STEM graduate students, post docs, faculty and staff have participated in Delta through the Program’s courses, workshops, facilitated discussion groups and community roundtable dinners. Program capstone experiences include Teaching-As-Research internships and a Certificate. We will provide an overview of Delta programming with a specific emphasis on participation, satisfaction and participant learning data. Examples of how participants put the Program pillars into practice will be provided. The value of using Teaching-As-Research as a framework for training STEM future faculty to improve their teaching to increase student learning will be discussed.
