AbstractThe main question addressed during this internship project was whether the use of hands-on activities during community outreach events would effectively educate adult participants about energy conservation in order to change their environmental behavior. Community outreach events encompassed family science nights, Wednesday Night at the Lab, the University of Wisconsin Engineering Expo, and Discovery!Thursday at the Madison Public Library. The hands-on activities used science process skills like questioning, problem solving, and communicating in order to focus on adult learning through practical and interactive activities. The effectiveness of this approach was determined through pre- and post- surveys, including a survey mailed to participants’ homes one month following the community outreach event.
