CIRTL Summer Course Wraps Up
The CIRTL Network recently wrapped up its first summer course. Thirteen students from eight CIRTL Network institutions completed, “Developing a Teaching Portfolio.” Nancy Abney, Instructor & Program Manager, University of Alabama at Birmingham Graduate School Professional Development Program, guided students in developing a Teaching Portfolio for improving teaching and enhancing student learning. The web-based curriculum introduced the essential elements of a teaching portfolio, provided tools for gathering necessary documentation, and through individual feedback from the instructor, assisted participants in drafting a personal Philosophy of Teaching.
The class met in the CIRTL virtual meeting room on the first and last day of the six-week class. Students worked asynchronously with each other and the instructor in the intervening weeks. During the final virtual class session, students conducted peer reviews of the portfolios and welcomed Don Gillian-Daniel, Associate Director of the Delta Program in Research, Teaching and Learning, who facilitated a discussion of the diversity statements included in the teaching portfolios. Thanks go to Dr. Abney and the participating students for making the summer session a success.
