Leveraging Diversity: the Wisdom of Crowds in University Teaching

In the workshop, Derek started by having us experience the wisdom in crowds.  We each had to guess at the number of jelly beans in a jar.  Then after turning in our guesses, the group arrived at a guess.  One person was right on the money, but otherwise the group answer was the close.  This showed how discussion and many voices can bring about better results.  Then Derek showed a number of resources that could be used to crowdsource and offered ideas of how these might be used in a class, whether in the room or off-line.  I think there are some erally exciting Read More »

About the Learning-through-Diversity in Action Collection

“Doing” Learning-through-Diversity and good teaching go hand-in-hand. Sometimes it’s difficult to tease the two apart. Yet, Learning-through-Diversity is much more than just good, inclusive teaching. It is about using the diversity among your students to enhance the learning of all your students. This is more than making students feel welcome; more than retaining students from underrepresented groups.

Abstract:

Bob Galloway, professor of biomedical engineering, explicitly discusses scientific failure with students in all of his courses in an attempt to encourage students with less scientific training to take an active part in the class.  This strategy elicits more participation from students who are often reticent or shy.
