CIRTL Network Exchanges from the University of Colorado Boulder

Three CU Boulder TAR fellows participated in CIRTL Network Exchanges in the spring of 2012 to present the findings of their TAR research to fellow institutions in the CIRTL Network.

Kristin Boles presented the findings of her TAR research and gave a colloquium about her coursework at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Kristin conducted a study in the fall 2011 to determine if simple glassware demonstrations helped improve student performance in general chemistry labs. Read More »

AAU Working to Improve Undergraduate STEM Education

 "No single organization can improve undergraduate STEM education on its own, says Robert Mathieu, an astronomer who directs the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning based at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. It's a systemic problem, he says, "but AAU is one of the key levers that has to be aligned," citing the huge role that AAU institutions play in preparing future faculty members." Read More »

Vanderbilt and Fisk Commit to Affiliate Together as Full Institutional Members of CIRTL

Vanderbilt University has been an active and committed participant in the CIRTL Network since 2006.  One of Vanderbilt’s successful initiatives has been the Fisk-Vanderbilt Masters-to-PhD Bridge Program, a collaboration between STEM faculty at Vanderbilt and Fisk University, a Historically Black University in Nashville.  The Bridge Program is being developed as a model for significantly broadening the participation of women and underrepresented minorities attaining the PhD in the physical sciences Read More »

Angel Hoekstra presented her CIRTL-sponsored Teaching as Research project at Cal Poly in Pomona

Dr. Angel Hoekstra traveled to Pomona, California this week to present her TAR research at California Polytechnic State University (May 19, 2011).  Dr. Hoekstra's trip was sponsored by ADVANCE, an NSF grant designed to encourage the development of women in the sciences. A Second Network Exchange Participant's Experience - Jeff Klukas

I spent last week at CU-Boulder as one of the inaugural CIRTL network exchange participants. I had a chance to talk about my disciplinary research, presenting at Boulder's High Energy Physics seminar, as well as my teaching research, presenting to a physics graduate student group as well the their Physics Education Research (PER) group. It was an exhausting time, filled with meeting and conversing and trying to make a good impression, which is not the easiest thing for an introvert like myself.
